Natural Stone Plays a Major Role in 2023’s Top Kitchen Design Trends

Kitchen designers, along with experts including HGTV and House Beautiful, have weighed in on the top kitchen trends for 2023. And it comes as no surprise that natural stone is playing a bit part in today’s trending design concepts. From full slab backsplashes and waterfall islands to natural stone that infuses organic color and sustainability, here is a look at just some of the ways natural stone has become the star of the kitchen.

Backsplashes to the Ceiling
What better way to show off stone than to stretch it all the way to the ceiling. Whether it’s one  large piece of continuous stone or tiles stacked to the ceiling, the presence of all that stone adds an instant wow-factor. It’s a great way to add in beautiful natural textures and colors. Backsplashes can be matched to the countertop to make a bold statement or can be a different stone altogether for contrast. Open shelving is also a popular trend in today’s kitchens. Eliminating the upper cabinets gives you the space to show off that stone all the way up to the ceiling, around windows, and around range hoods.

Waterfall islands turn countertops into a striking focal point

Waterfall Islands
Everyone knows that natural stone helps amp up the glam factor in any space. And the more natural stone, the better. This is why waterfall islands are a trending concept. By extending the kitchen countertop at a 90-degree angle and flowing it to the floor, the island becomes a striking focal point and puts that gorgeous stone on display. Just like a full-slab backsplash, the seamless look adds depth, beauty, and elegance, making the stone a key component of the overall design. And speaking of islands, the bigger the better! A lot of homeowners are opting to skip the dining room. A good solution is, therefore, a large kitchen island that is big enough for dining and entertaining. Even double kitchen islands are a growing concept, with one for working and one for eating.

Natural Warm Colors
White has dominated the kitchen landscape for some time, but this year we’re seeing color make its way back to the kitchen and bath. Homeowners are embracing warmer tones as well as bold pops of color. Organic colors are appealing, and we’re even seeing more warm natural wood tones in cabinetry. Even when whites and grays are being used for cabinets, we’re seeing them paired with warmer, creamier shades of natural stone. And since natural stone such as marble can come in a beautiful array of colors (think pink, deep emerald, and gorgeous shades of blue) it’s a great option for infusing color into the kitchen or bath.

Sustainable materials
One trend that’s dominating in the kitchen, bath, and all through the home is sustainability. Designers, architects, and homeowners too want to make the best possible choice for the health of their family and the environment. Natural stone offers peace of mind. As we mentioned in a previous blog, natural stone has recently received important Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that help to solidify its status as a sustainable material. Since it’s made by Mother Nature, it’s durable, recyclable, and manufactured ethically, natural stone received EPDs for cladding, flooring/paving, and countertops for both commercial and residential applications both indoors and outside. We can now “officially” say that natural stone is a green choice!

Since every slab of natural stone is a one-of-a-kind work of art, stone is the perfect choice for today’s kitchen.
