The Cost of Granite Countertops: Understanding How Granite Countertops are Priced

March 06, 2012

Consumers need to know and understand the certain facets of the granite countertop industry in order to make informed, confidant decisions. By educating themselves on granite pricing, consumers can better assess and compare the true value of individual granite countertop products. The first important factor is that different contractors price granite countertops differently. For example, one quote for granite countertops may appear to be a better value then another, but it may only be because part of the total cost is excluded. These are most likely granite countertop quotes that are given in square feet, which can be deceiving as it leaves out all other required costs. Instead, always be sure you are receiving a quote for the completed granite countertop project. This quote will prevent any surprises later on as it includes not only the stone per square foot but also the edge polishing cutouts, backsplashes and installation, as well.

Fireplace Finishes with Neolith by TheSize

March 01, 2012
Fireplace Finishes Can Be Works Of Art

A snowy day. A warm fire. Nothing is as cozy as a fire in the hearth. Trundling in from the frosty air to a roaring fire is as emotionally pleasing as it is physically warming. Most everyone agrees a fire in a room adds a feeling of home to the ambiance.

Some fireplaces are utilitarian, others, pretty. However, there are those that completely stand out. These last are with the finishing touches of NeoLith by TheSize. Fireplace finishes can make all the difference between a room that is warmed by a fire and a room showcased by an artful design with a function. NeoLith changes the feel of a room to make it more a home, a place of comfort.

Anyone who has ever used a fireplace on a regular basis has experienced smoke stains on the wall. It is usually a glaring feature of the room the moment you walk in. No matter what you do, the smoke stains cannot be removed from the brick, or the wall above it. With NeoLith by TheSize, that disfigurement will no longer be an issue. These fireplace finishes are unable to be stained, for the material has no pores. Smoke buildup is easily wiped away.

Another truly glaring characteristic about a fireplace is the scorched area around the fireplace. Because the fireplace finishes made with NeoLith are created in a kiln, it is difficult to actually burn the surface. The fireplace finishes are formed from clay and surrounded by a glaze. This outer covering blends together with the clay when it is heated to extreme temperatures. For this reason, the burning logs will not mar the surface, as the fireplace finishes can stand very high temperatures.

Think of it. The presence of a warm, glowing, happy fire in your living room to give a sense of peace as much as added heat. And, the beauty of this finish will last for years to come, as it is incredibly durable and will not scratch or lose its luster. All this, plus the aesthetics of a work of art.

When you see this for yourself, you will feel an immediate appreciation of the beauty and workmanship TheSize has created for your fireplace. To order the best finish you could ever experience for your hearth, visit Marble and Granite, Inc. to place your order for your new fireplace.

5 Secrets to Caring for Granite Countertops

February 28, 2012

While stone countertops are trusted and preferred for their long-lasting durability, there are certain practices that are necessary to maintaining the exquisite beauty of your granite countertops, marble countertops or other natural stone surface. In a recent article, House Beautiful magazine shares the five secrets to keeping stone countertops in prime condition straight from kitchen designer Florence Perchuck, who has over 38-years of experience in the kitchen industry. Here are the five things that Perchuck believe consumers should know about stone countertops.

  1. Spills need to be wiped up immediately so as to prevent stains caused by liquids penetrating the surface.

  2. A proper seal can be tested by ensuring that water beads and forms droplets on the stone surface.

  3. Different stones require different sealing, cleaning and maintaining regimens; for example, marble is more porous than granite and, therefore, requires more frequent resealing.

  4. Always get a second opinion on sealing and cleaning products to make sure they are safe and effective on your particular stone surface.

  5. Do not assume that black stone surfaces (as opposed to white or other light colored stone surfaces) will be easier to keep a perfectly clean appearance; it is black stone surfaces, in fact, that show the most fingerprints.

A good stone cleaner is the key to daily maintenance of stone countertops. According to  House Beautiful article, Perchuck explains that it is always best to get a second opinion on stone countertop products, however, Perchuck does directly recommend StoneTech as an accredited sealing and cleaning system for natural stone countertops. Marble and Granite, Inc. unveils Internet Pricing

February 23, 2012

What a commotion we created last week when we published the retail price of our materials on our website. The trade, such as builders, architects and designers as well as consumers welcomed the change but the loudest complaint came from our customers, the fabricators. Of course, we have changed the way the final price is presented to the customers, although the price itself hasn't changed. Kitchen countertops will continue to cost roughly the same but now the consumer will be more knowledgeable about how their money is spent.
The most common question asked was: "Will you sell direct?". Our answer is: "When it makes sense for the customer". For a homeowner renovating a kitchen or building their new house, it really does not make financial sense. They would be purchasing full slabs and all the waste, taking ownership of the product with all the risk that it entails, and they would not  be prepared to handle or transport the slabs properly and safely. However, for some of the trade- developers, builders and kitchen dealers- it could make sense depending on the business arrangement that they have with their fabricators.

To find out more about the project cost breakdown, you can click here download this document that will explain in detail the cost of a kitchen countertop.

2012 Survey Shows Majority Agree Nothing Beats Granite Countertops

February 16, 2012

Those who once thought granite countertops were just a trend better think again. Harris Interactive conducted a new survey commissioned by the Marble Institute of America to find out how many American homeowners still prefer granite countertops to other countertop surfaces. Out of the 1,588 American homeowners surveyed last month, 76% of them agreed with the statement "Nothing beats the beauty and value of granite countertops." This was the second survey Harris Interactive has conducted like this, with the first one in 2008 resulting in 55% of consumers preferring granite countertops. Here are the results of the January 2012 survey that confirms granite as the No.1 choice for countertop surfaces in 2012 despite economic and industry trends in the last few years.

• 75% of homeowners who intend to remodel their kitchen in the next couple of years plan on getting granite countertops.

• 89% of homeowners agreed granite countertops are safe.

• 91% of homeowners agreed granite countertops are durable.

• 93% of homeowners agreed granite countertops are beautiful.

As you can see, homeowners overwhelmingly recognize that granite countertops enhance the value of your home more than any other surface. Not only do homeowners agree granite countertops are a safe investment with their high resale value, but they prefer the look of granite countertops as well. As Marble Institute of America CEO states in an article, "Independent consumer surveys have consistently shown that Americans love the natural look of granite and value it above other countertop products."
