Beige: Anything But Bland

Beige: Anything But Bland

March 12, 2015

The color beige might sound boring. I mean… they call it “builder’s beige” for a reason. But beige doesn’t have to be bland…especially when it comes in the form of beautiful Daino Reale marble. This marble color may sound familiar. It was once one of the more popular selections for residential countertops before falling out of fashion. But, Daino Reale Marble is seeing a resurgence as the beauty of neutrals are once again prized.

Quarried in Sardinia, Italy, from a bedrock quarry, this marble’s qualities are very similar to those of a vein-cut travertine. It doesn’t, however, have the natural pitting that travertine does. Daino Reale Marble was formed at the bottom of a shallow sea where sediments built up over millions of years. Its unique formation process gives it an exceptional layered structure. It’s not out of the ordinary for one portion of the slab to be much darker than the rest.

Due to the qualities of the stone, the slabs are book-matched—meaning two slabs are cut and polished to create mirror images of each other. The slabs are kept in sequence to allow for consistent flow of the pattern. Sometimes there are voids in the Daino Reale Marble. So, before it’s polished and finished, the voids are filled with polyester resin. Even with the filled areas, the stone is still exceptionally durable and it’s maintained just like any other marble.
